Ghetto Colo is our informal term for the practice of having someone essentially co-locate your server for you temporarily in their dorm room or apartment or basement or whatever while you are moving, or out of town for break, or whatever; and also the catch-all term for our hopes to expand on this practice. This might be the place that your off-site backups live, for instance. The general idea is that you might not have the need, or the cash, to do full-on commercial co-location, but a little something extra somewhere else could be really handy sometimes.
The dream is to have some space somewhere that would be semi-permanent for this sort of activity, probably the cheapest commercial or industrial rental space we could find. We would want it accessible enough for people to be able to access without too much hassle. It might end up being used as a kind of network computing workshop, a sort of computer analog to the
Workspace in the Memorial Union or for hosting a
tool library.
Think of it as an artist's studio for netgeeks. The Community Colo project
has this to say about starting a community colo project.
